The report header and footer cells are like column header cells in that they only accept static text Dynamic data from the database only appears in the data cells of a column If you choose to key the field name manually into the data cell of a column, you must ensure that you type the name of the field exactly as it is referenced in the database, and that you enter the name of the field using capital letters Concordance won t match a field name entered with lower case letters with a field in the database, and an error will be generated when the report is activated You can modify how the dynamic data in a data cell is displayed in the report by means of additional labeling, or with Concordance functions.

The result of this query is a table, of course just like any result of a query. However, there is no oneto-one mapping anymore between the rows of the EMPLOYEES table and the three rows of the result. Instead, you aggregate employee data per department. To explain how the GROUP BY operator works, and how the SQL language handles aggregation, Listing 8-15 shows an imaginary representation of an intermediate result. Listing 8-15 shows a pseudotable, with three rows and six columns. For readability, some columns of the EMPLOYEES table are omitted. In the last column, you see the three different department numbers, and the other five columns show sets of attribute values. These sets are represented by enumerating their elements in a commaseparated list between braces. Some of these sets contain null values only, such as e.COMM for departments 10 and 20.

You can combine the dynamic data, the additional labeling, and these Concordance functions in the same cell to display complex interpretations of data For example, with a column labeled CC and a corresponding database field that represents the carbon copy list of an e-mail document record, you might wish for each entry to have an additional Recipient: label The column header will appear as CC; the data in the field will be displayed under that column header, and the text Recipient: will appear to the left of each set of data (see Figure 10-26)..

You could argue that (as an effect of the GROUP BY e.DEPTNO clause) the last column in Listing 8-15 (e.DEPTNO) contains regular values, and the other five columns become set-valued attributes. You can use only e.DEPTNO in the SELECT clause. If you want to see data from the other columns in your query result, you must use group functions (such as COUNT) to aggregate those sets into a single value. See the next section for a discussion of group functions.

The syntax for displaying information in this way is as follows: "Recipient: " + CC This section of text represents three things: the label, Recipient, which must be bracketed by double quotes; the + symbol, which concatenates sections of text; and CC, which represents dynamic data from the CC field (see Figure 10-27).
