In the early days of Catalyst, almost everything was extended via adding a new Catalyst::Plugin. Unfortunately, this resulted in a proliferation of silly plug-in modules that added little value and polluted the global Catalyst namespace on CPAN. Plug-ins do have a place, but only when what you re doing is intimately bound up with the request cycle. Here s an example of what not to do with a plug-in, using the very old plug-in Catalyst:: Plugin::Textile (for processing the Textile markup formatting to HTML): package Catalyst::Plugin::Textile; use strict; use base 'Class::Data::Inheritable'; use Text::Textile; __PACKAGE__->mk_classdata('textile'); __PACKAGE__->textile( Text::Textile->new ); This adds a $c->textile method into MyApp. Really, we would want to make this model code, for example: package MyApp::Model::Textile use base Catalyst::Model::Adaptor; __PACKAGE__->config( class => 'Text::Textile'); 1; We can then call $c->model('Textile')->textile from controller code, or even better, with a bit of messing around with the view class, we could provide a helper method in the view for data (e.g., particular stash keys) to be processed as Textile markup. We could use our own Template::Plugin if we re using the Template Toolkit. Having shown a more correct way to do things, we can focus on where plug-ins make sense. The purpose of showing you an incorrect plug-in and the corresponding correct model is so that when you re writing code, you can tell if you need a model or a plug-in. If you need information from $c in your model, one way of achieving this is with Catalyst:: Model::Adaptor, Catalyst::Model::Factory, or Catalyst::Model::FactoryPerRequest. Each of these is described in 11.

We can make an application-specific plug-in just by declaring a new subroutine in our application. In fact, you saw this with the DwarfChains example in 7. For example, we might want to change the way $c->uri_for works, depending on which Catalyst view is currently active. This could be very specific to our particular action. In the following code, we override uri_for to produce a URI with a different base depending on whether we want to publish a page or edit it:

This tool assumes the log file is properly structured. The section Exporting an Imagebase to a Log File discusses the structure of a log file. The Log file text field displays the full file path and file name of the log file to be loaded. You can manually key this information into the field, or use the Browse button to open an Open dialog, which you can use to navigate to and select the desired log file. Once you select the log, the Load button triggers the load. As each line of the log file is loaded, if Opticon finds a matching row in the imagebase, data for an image is updated to match data from the log file. If no match is found, new image entries are appended to the imagebase. The Status field displays feedback to you about the load s progress and tallies final results (see Figure 13-12).
